March is Music In Our Schools Month
To celebrate Music In Our Schools Month, FUFSD is highlighting the outstanding work happening across its music programs. From consistently earning awards to delivering memorable performances, students throughout the district continue to showcase remarkable talent.
“Our district has been a great home for music education,” said Golden Hill music teacher Kristin Risedorph. “Not to toot my own horn — pun intended — but my fifth grade chorus often brings home a gold rating from NYSSMA Majors. The students really get excited about striving for the best rating. We also have students participate in All-County festivals every year, which is a great way for them to connect with other young musicians from around the county.”
Risedorph is also active in Orange County’s music organization and values regularly connecting with fellow elementary music teachers to stay up to date on new classroom instruments and engaging activities.
“I personally think the elementary program is so successful because of the support I receive from classroom teachers,” Risedorph added. “We have great relationships, and they are always willing to help students succeed in their musical endeavors.”
This month, Golden Hill musicians attended All-County, where they joined other young performers from across the region to rehearse and perform challenging pieces. First- and second-grade students also performed their mini-musical, “Pajama Party,” for classmates and family members.
S.S. Seward music teacher Mark Visconti also spoke about the success he sees among his middle and high school students.
“I would say we accomplish some pretty great things, even though we’re a small school,” Visconti said.
He noted that the district has had representatives in every All-County Chorus group for the past two years. Visconti also teaches several popular electives, including History of Rock and Roll, Guitar and Music Theory.
This year, Seward also launched a new chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, welcoming 11 inaugural members.
Will Couture has a unique perspective when it comes to his musicians as he has his students from fourth grade at Golden Hill to senior year at Seward.
“In a small ensemble you can’t hide,” said Couture. “My musicians often are playing their own line and have to hold their own. It turns them into confident musicians.”
Couture shared that he enjoys teaching band as he gets to interact with a mix of students. His ensemble consists of artists, athletes and even the valedictorian.
“During Music in Our Schools Month, we proudly celebrate a program that continues to set the standard for excellence across our district,” said Superintendent Dr. Lisamarie Spindler. “Our ensembles are more than performances, they are communities where students learn discipline, collaboration and confidence. Through music, our students build lasting friendships and grow into leaders who carry these skills far beyond the stage. The dedication of our students and educators is evident in every note.”
