Once Upon a Library Class: Golden Hill Library Fosters Love of Books
Golden Hill’s Library welcomes students of all ages throughout the day to explore new worlds, meet wacky characters, conduct research on animals and nature, and so much more!
“I love school,” said Hannah Fontus. “But I love the library.”
Fontus’s pre-K class read a book from the Bad Kitty series. Afterwards, they sat down to do a coloring page of a scene from the story and trace the title.
“The book was so funny. It made me laugh,” said Korra McFarland before recounting the events of the story.
Library teacher Kara Rolando says the coloring sheets help the students remember and talk about the books they read. “When they bring the sheet home and someone asks what they did today, they may have a better chance of remembering and talking about the book.”
Pre-K students get to choose one book to take home every week. All other grades pick two books.
“I read with my dad at home,” said McFarland. “He likes to read with me. I like to take home the Disney books, but sometimes I take something else home. Last week I had a book about a mitten!”
After pre-K was finished, third graders came into the library smiling and chatting about their borrowed books from the previous week.
Rolando announced that they would be reading the first chapter of “The World According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney, and the class was disappointed they would not be reading more that day!
Older students also learn how to conduct research on a topic and how to utilize databases.
