Though students can’t vote on the district’s capital project, Superintendent Lisamarie Spindler made sure student input was included. She used some time in her recent Superintendent’s Council meetings with Golden Hill and S.S. Seward Institute students to gain their feedback on the conceptual renderings of the library renovations at both schools. The groups meet a few times a year to discuss important topics and engage in leadership activities.
Although there are a lot of differences between elementary, middle and high school students, the feedback was similar, including that they liked the lighting pictured at Golden Hill, as well as the soft seating and welcoming entrance. Both groups mentioned the need for an open space for a large rug.
The groups also discussed what they’d like to see more of at school outside the capital project, including ways to celebrate their teachers, welcome new students and more.
“It’s really nice that we have this space to voice our ideas. Today was really productive and a good introductory meeting for the year,” said Abby Orlando.
Returning council member Kendall Dazi shared, “I’ve enjoyed seeing changes already based on what we talked about last year, like new classes and furniture.” Students look forward to continuing to make a difference at their schools.
“Meeting with students is one way for me to keep my finger on the pulse of our schools. I enjoy hearing honest feedback and ideas from students and working with them on new ideas,” shared Spindler. “It’s important for them to know that their voices are valued and heard.”
