Seward students complete Valentines for Veterans

In response to Congressman Pat Ryan’s third annual “Valentines for Vets” initiative, Seward students created over 50 cards to thank veterans for their service.Students decorate valentines letters to Veterans

The project saw high school art students and members of the Seward Art Club design and write 50 appreciative and sentimental postcards dedicated to veterans and veteran caregivers ahead of Valentine’s Day. An additional 22 watercolor postcards were added for the veterans to give to their loved ones.

The cards were delivered to veterans at Caste Point VA and Vassar Brothers Medical Center, as well as to Hudson River Housing and Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) across the Hudson Valley. The program’s inaugural year saw over 9,000 valentines delivered to veterans. Pile of letters to Veterans from students

Art Club President Cricket Carey, a senior, explained the importance of this initiative. “The Valentine’s Day card project was a great way to get our name out there by doing something meaningful for the community, especially since it was dedicated to our veterans,” Carey explained.

The club is always welcoming new members and any students interested in joining should talk to teacher Lucy Duquette.

“There are so many talented young artists here who love having this club, not only to be able to express themselves through, but also to have as an opportunity to make new friends and collaborate with other like-minded, creative people,” Carey said.
