March marks Music in Our Schools Month, which recognizes the vital role music education plays in the lives of students and the community. The Florida Union Free School District takes great pride in its flourishing music program, which has grown tremendously thanks to its talented teachers and the leadership of one dedicated woman.

The music program’s professional development facilitator Lynda Keech, a music educator and pianist, has been instrumental in advancing the music program by bringing a wealth of experience and expertise. With assistance from the music teachers, she has shaped a vision for expanding and enhancing music opportunities within the district.

“Her leadership has focused on increasing student participation, integrating new technologies into music instruction and building a comprehensive program that supports both beginners and advanced musicians,” Superintendent Dr. Lisamarie Spindler said. “With the dedication of our educators and the support of the district, we are committed to expanding opportunities and fostering a lifelong love of music in our students.”

Keech appreciates the support from administration, students and the community, as well as having the chance to collaborate on a regular basis with the music teachers to work out solutions. Students performing in band on stage

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” Keech said. “You can’t take the music out of me.”

For Keech, the process of getting to a performance is an important tool in education.

“We become a cohesive class as an ensemble … it’s a special time for us to get creative in our expression and what we do,” Keech explained. “It’s a nice time to bring to the forefront all that happens, because a lot of times people only see the final performance.”

The music program thrives because of the music teachers’ unwavering commitment to students who they inspire daily to develop their musical talents and appreciation. They create opportunities for students, in both schools, to explore themselves through music.

“Their hard work ensures that every student, regardless of skill level, has the opportunity to engage with music in a meaningful way,” Spindler said of the staff. “Their passion and hard work make our district’s music program a source of pride and joy for all.”Students performing on stage wearing black outfits

The district will continue to expand music opportunities for students to thrive.

“We remain committed to fostering a vibrant music program and will continue to create opportunities to expand access and engagement for all students,” Spindler said.
